ely’s Big Tasting will be held on Friday, march 22nd 2013 in ely bar & brasserie IFSC, and, as ever promises to be a fantastic evening of tasting – There will be more than 100 wines from 15 countries, including classics from the old world, modern classics from the new, not to mention Champagnes, Ports, sherries and dessert wines. New this year will be ely’s ‘Little Grapes’ table, where we will showcase new and interesting varietals that have captured our imagination and we think will do the same for you ! We will also feature artisan beers, Irish Ciders, Sheridans Cheesemongers, organic beef from our family farm, artisan breads and much more…..
There will be two sessions, 6.00 -7.30pm, and 8.00 – 9.30 pm.
Tickets are €25 or €20 with your ely loyalty card.

Green Spot and Yellow Spot Whiskey

Green Spot and Yellow Spot were originally produced by the Mitchell family who commenced trading in 1805 at 10 Grafton Street in the heart of Dublin city as purveyors of fine wine and confectionery. Four generations later, the company is still in the wine and spirits business under the stewardship of Jonathan Mitchell and his son Robert.

The Mitchell Family expanded into the whiskey bonding business in 1887, whereby they sent empty wine and fortified wine casks via horse and cart to the local Jameson Distillery which were then filled with new Pot Still spirit and returned to the Mitchell’s maturation cellars. There, the whiskeys matured for many years under bond until they were ready to be bottled and sold.

Green Spot

The Spot name was derived from the Mitchell’s practice of marking their maturing casks of whiskey with a mark or daub of coloured paint to determine the age potential of the whiskey. Blue spot was an 8 year old, Green spot a 10, Yellow Spot a 12 and Red spot a 15. In time, all but “Green spot” disappeared with Yellow Spot last being seen in whiskey shelves in the early 1960’s.

Green Spot

…is a non age statement Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey and is comprised of Pot Still whiskey aged between 7 and 10 years. The whiskey has matured in a combination of new bourbon and refill bourbon casks as well as sherry butts. Only small quantities of Green Spot are bottled each year making it a rare and much sought delight.

Nose: Fresh aromatic oils and spices with orchard fruits and barley on a background of toasted wood.
Taste: Full spicy body. A hint of cloves along with the fruity sweetness of green apples, rounded off with toasted oak.
Finish: Lingering flavours of spices and barley.

Bottled at 40% ABV | Non chill filtered

Yellow Spot

yellow-spot-1…is a 12 Year Old Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey. Rather than being simply a “finished” whiskey, Yellow Spot is special in that it contains whiskey that has been matures a full 12 year period in three oak cask types: American bourbon barrels, Spanish sherry butts, and uniquely, Spanish Makaga casjs, The influence of the Malaga cask brings an exotic sweet note to the whiskey making it a truly delightful taste experience. only extremely limited quantities of Yellow Spot have been bottled making it a whiskey to seek out and savour as a true rarity.

Notes: Mown hay & cracked black pepper, Red bell peppers, nutmeg, clove oil & green tea. Sweet honey & peaches from the Malaga casks.
Taste: Honey sweetness with Pot Still Spices. Flavours of fresh coffee, creamy milk chocolate & Crème brûlée. Notes of Red apples & toasted oak.
Finish: Sophisticated & complex. Sweetness throughout, with a mix of red grape & dry barley upon exit.
Yellow Spot
Bottled at 46% ABV | Non chill filtered | 12 Years Old

Single Pot Still Whiskey is unique to Ireland in general and to Middleton Distillery, Co Cork, in particular, and is regarded as the quintessential style of Irish whiskey. Made from a mash of malted and unmalted barley and then triple distilled in traditional copper pot stills, Pot Still Whiskeys are characterised by full, complex flavours and wonderful creammy mouthfeel.
