So the first ely Big Tasting of 2014 is finally upon us!

Thanks to all of our brilliant suppliers, along with many of the ely favourites, we have some wonderful new wines, craft beers and ciders for you to taste.

Try the Ballyhook flyer or Stonewell ciders alongside some of the finest of Irish cheeses, or the organic smoked beef from our family farm matched with some great craft beers. Bar manager at ely gastro bar, Barry Rowan will be plucking out some of his favourite Irish and International craft beers from ely gastro bar’s range of over 50 craft beers.

Don’t forget to make sure you get the chance to taste the Nyetimber- an English sparkling wine that rivals many a Champagne for quality.

However, the purists among you can rest easy- we’ll have some Champagne superstars there too! It’s looking like it’s going to be a beautiful day- come join us on the terrace for a glass of bubbles before, or a cleansing craft beer after!

Influential UK wine writer Mathew Jukes released his 100 best Australian wines for 2012 and, as usual, it features a host of ely restaurants favourites.  The list covers a broad spectrum of prices and styles, from affordable, quality orientated producers such Willunga 100, Innocent Bystander and Pewsey Vale, to world class, highly sought after names such as Cullen, Henschke and Clonakilla.  A new name to that list, and to ours, is Ten Minutes by Tractor. Mathew puts it – “a major force to be reckoned with in the world of global Pinot Noir worship”.

Based in Mornington Peninsula, southeast of Melbourne, they have developed a reputation for sublime, elegant and complex wines from the two grapes that excel in the region, the great Burgundian duo of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.  They produce stunning single vineyard wines from the McCutchen, Wallis and Judd vineyards, and the 10X wines, which are blended from the three.  These wines challenge the very best from burgundy and at the same time remain distinctly Australian.

Four of their wines are currently listed in ely winebar 22 Ely Place,  the 10x Chardonnay 2010- fresh pear and white peach on the nose, with a smoky, minerally palate and lovely weight  on the finish. The 2008 Wallis Vineyard Chardonnay is an even more complex affair with stones and stone fruit- peaches and nectarines with a minerality that surges forward on the palate, and the deft use of oak results in an incredible harmony of texture and flavour. It is a stunning wine.

10X PINOT NOIR 2010

TEN MINUTES BY TRACTOR 10X PINOT NOIR 2010

Of the Pinots, the 2010 10X Pinot Noir is soft, ripe and fragrant, with strawberry, cherry and a touch of damson and a remarkable freshness. It would put many a big name Burgundy to shame.

The 2009 McCutchen is among the finest Pinots I’ve ever tasted from Australia- It impresses at first with its vibrant red fruits-  fresh cherry and raspberry,  and a texture so silky it’s almost sinful . But given some time in the glass it develops in to something altogether different, conjuring up savoury, meaty aromas, and a smoky spiciness. Everything comes together seamlessly in a finish that lingers on the palate like a fond memory.

Dublin wine tasting: Cabernet Sauvignon – Bordeaux vs the World

With the days (and nights) starting to get a bit colder we hosted a tasting of deliciously rich and warming Cabernet on the 12th October 2011.

Our great line-up of the best Cabernet from around the world included iconic examples from  Argentina, Australia, South Africa, California and not forgetting Bordeaux! Cabernet’s main attributes are its firm tannins, fresh acidity and red fruit flavours. Throughout the evening our tasters got to experience how wonderfully different it can taste depending on which corner of the globe it is made.

Bodegas Lurton’s Cabernet Sauvignon is fruit driven with buckets of dark berries and gentle herby notes, offering the perfect balance between the savoury, herbaceous Bordeaux and the ripe and luscious Aussie interpretation. Uco Valley just south of Mendoza in the foothills of the Andes is considered one of the best places to plant red grape varieties and Bodegas Lurton were one of thr pioneering growers from the region. Lurton is now a 3rd generation wine-producing family originally from France, and you can really taste their French roots in this fantastic Cabernet!

Following Argentina’s offering we looked at one of the great Aussie producers! D’Arenberg, despite being quite a large producer, applies artisan practices to their prodcue enabling them to make very high quality wines. The High Trellis 2008 is a great example Aussie Cabernet at it’s best: aromas of fresh, ripe blueberries and cassis mingle with violets and leafy aromatics. There’s a touch of spicy oak adding complexity to the typical d’Arenberg soulful earthiness. This was one of the favourites of the night and went down on a real treat.

We also plucked from a region less known for making great Cabernet: Stellenbosch in South Africa. Famous for making Pinotage, Meerlust’s Rubicon is their most awarded wine and is a Bordeaux blend consisting of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc and 8% Merlot. It has all the savouriness of Bordeaux with dark fruits and earthy smokiness. South Africa can be overlooked when looking for an elegant wine, but in the last decade has seen an emergence of world-class winemaking across the cape. 

The penultimate wine was Cakebread Cellars’ Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley. Napa is a very special wine making region and it’s adaption to Cabernet has been instrumental in the development and evolution of the area. Characteristocally it has cassis, blackberry and boysenberry with subtle hints cedar, black tea spice and sweet oak scents.  It would be hard to mention Californian Cabernet and not mention the great tasting of 1976 where, in a blind tasting, Stag’s Leap Cabernet topped its Bordelian counterparts. Californian Cabernet can be a bit of an insiders secret, but it’s time to let it out of the bag!

Our last wine on the list was a classic Boredaux wine. Bordeaux is divided into 2 categories, the right bank for Merlot based wines (with a small proportion of Cabernet) and the left bank for Cabernet based wines (with a proportion of Merlot). Right bank wines refers to wines coming from the right bank of the Dordogne and includes Pomerol and St Emilion whilst wines on the left bank include Medoc, Haut-Medoc, St Estephe, Margaux and Pauillac. Bordeaux Cabernet is one of the most restrained, earthy and savoury expressions with delicious flavours of red and blackcurrants, pencil shaving and cedar. The example we chose for the tasting was ‘La Bastide Dauzac’  from Margaux, the 2nd wine of Chateau Dauzac.

All the wines were presented by the wonderful Monica Murphy of Febvre, who showed us what makes Cabernet Sauvignon so unique and how each terroir can create subtle, and sometimes not so subtle, differences in this wonderful grape.

Experts will be on hand to guide you through the tasting and you can taste as many or as few as you like. The ultimate Shiraz tasting: 8th September 2011 at ely, IFSC

The ultimate SHIRAZ tasting

ely is absolutely delighted to host an exclusive evening with two passionate lovers of the Shiraz / Syrah grape.

Clonakilla Winery in Australia has been receiving the highest of accolades for more than 20 years and has been described by The Wall Street Journal as ‘Australia’s greatest red wine; it is certainly one of its greatest Shiraz’s’ and as ‘one of the leading small wineries in the country’ by Huon Hooke.

Tim Kirk of Clonakilla will be joined by Ireland’s award winning Rhone specialist Tyrrell & Company Wine Importers, who are renowned for their range and expertise in Rhone wines. Tyrrell’s has supplied ely since we first opened 11 years ago and have been staples on our list ever since.

Our hosts for the night have over 50 years experience between them and are united by the passion for Syrah and Shiraz. During the evening we will hear about tales of Shiraz from Australia, France and around the globe and taste Crozes Hermitage, Cote Rotie, and other specially selected Syrah wines alongside their Aussie counterparts. Our head chef has devised a 3 course menu to match the wines and will feature the best in Irish seasonal produce.

The ultimate Shiraz tasting is perfect if you are a lover of the Aussie Shiraz, Rhone reds or simply enjoy wine and want to learn more in a casual and informative atmosphere.
